Breaking news is a news event that is so important or urgent that it requires an immediate interruption in normal non-news programming (or, sometimes, regular newscasts). Until 24-hour news networks became commonplace, broadcasters would normally interrupt their own regular programs with “newsflash” or “special report” alert crawls and cut-ins. In the case of an extremely significant breaking news event, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the entire national network feed may be interrupted with a countdown sequence to allow local affiliates to join in the coverage from that point onward. The use of a special graphic and distinctive music cue is also used to signal an emergency news break.
