About Trending
Breaking news is the term for events that elicit so much coverage and urgency that current non-news programming on a network’s feed must be interrupted for live reports. When this happens, the network will usually begin a countdown sequence to allow its affiliated stations to join the break (known as a “newsflash” or a “special report”). The breaking news report is then introduced with a special graphic and a unique music cue that will identify the story. Depending on the story, breaking news may last only a few minutes or several hours, even days. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were rare and typically reserved for extremely urgent stories such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
