Current News

A breaking news story is a recent issue that warrants interruption of a network or station’s programming in order to report its details. This coverage usually lasts a short amount of time or for a long period of time, depending on the event.

Special reports and breaking news are a common feature of broadcast television, often used to cover major events such as political rallies and the formal inauguration of winners of national elections, as well as severe weather events (such as tornadoes and hurricanes) that require immediate threat alerts, cut-ins, and long-form weather coverage. These events may also include less significant news stories that have been assigned to a live reporter and are being covered for the first time.

Breaking news typically involves an opening graphic (which features music and often emphasizes the importance of the event) and a voiceover announcing the event to the viewer. This is followed by a live shot of the anchor or the reporter covering the event, and then by a news segment or interview.

The outro usually includes a promo that directs viewers to the network’s website or other platforms for further information about the breaking news. Alternatively, if the story is breaking locally, the local station or stations may take over local programming in its early fringe timeslot and re-join the network feed for a live edition of that program.

The phrase “breaking news” is sometimes erroneously applied to soft, unimportant news stories of questionable urgency, as well as to car chases and other events that do not have the impact or importance that a major story would. However, a breaking news story is considered to be a major story or event when the story continues for a significant amount of time.
