In broadcasting, breaking news is a live interruption of regular non-news programming to cover an urgent current event. Generally, it is done in a short period of time and does not last long; however, if the event is extremely serious (such as an assassination or other major disaster), the network may interrupt its regular programming for extended coverage. The interruption typically begins with a countdown sequence to allow affiliates to switch to the feed, and it will often include a special newsflash graphic and a distinctive music cue. News tickers and lower thirds are also sometimes used to break stories during regular programming.
