Trending is a term used by television and radio news networks to describe breaking stories that are generating significant public interest. Breaking news often interrupts current non-news programming, and may also cause network affiliates to suspend their regular commercial advertising. When a story is deemed urgent enough, a “Newsflash” or “Special report” graphic is displayed on the screen, and a countdown sequence begins to allow stations to switch over to the network feed. Alternatively, a breaking news ticker may be displayed during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for cut-ins. This is a common feature of 24-hour news channels. For example, such graphics were used for the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which required many stations to interrupt their programming to cover.
