When a major news event occurs that warrants breaking news coverage, a television network will interrupt its current non-news programming to begin coverage of the story. The national feed will usually go to a countdown sequence to allow affiliates to join in, and the network anchor will often welcome viewers and introduce the story at hand. The use of special graphics and music cues may also be used, to convey a sense of urgency and the seriousness of the news. Breaking news coverage can last for a brief time, or it may continue for hours or days of in-depth reporting. NBC has recently used “Special Report” tickers for select breaking stories, lessening the need for cut-ins and news flashes.
