When a major news event occurs, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, which elicited nationwide coverage that required stations to interrupt regular programming to cover the story, a special report (also known as a newsflash or a news ticker) is typically broadcast on television and radio. Unlike a normal station imaging promo or program reminder, the breaking news graphic is often overlaid during the report and may use a distinctive soundtrack to convey urgency. A countdown is typically used to give network affiliates time to switch over from their regular feed and start the special report.
