During the days before 24-hour news networks, breaking news events that were deemed urgent were handled through cut-ins during regular commercial programming. The network feed would usually pause or count down to allow affiliated stations to switch to the feed and join in the report, typically using a graphic overlay with distinctive music cues. Depending on the nature of the story, the report may run for just a few minutes or for hours or even days. This type of coverage is commonly referred to as Newsflash, Special Report or Breaking News. For current news events, there are now “Trending” crawls and tickers that can be displayed during non-news programming without the need for a newscast interruption.
