A breaking news story is an event that warrants an immediate interruption of current non-news programming (or, in the case of network newscasts, regularly scheduled programing). Breaking news is typically preceded by a graphic and a special music cue. On television, this is often followed by a news anchor identifying the story and providing further information. On radio, this is normally accompanied by an alert crawl and/or a station imaging promo. In the past, such break-ins were reserved for exceptionally urgent stories of nationwide importance, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. During such events, network affiliates may also interrupt regular commercial advertising to add in their own local coverage.
