A breaking news story is a current news event that warrants an immediate interruption in non-news programming (or, in the case of network affiliates, a regularly scheduled broadcast) for coverage. This coverage is often referred to as a newsflash, special report or alert crawl. Before 24-hour news networks were common, such breaking-news interruptions were usually reserved for events of national importance such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, or for severe weather warnings involving a tornado or landfalling hurricane. Typically, the event is signaled by an open graphic and a distinctive music cue, with lower thirds or other graphics altered to convey a sense of urgency.
