Breaking news is an announcement or report of a sudden, important event that is happening right now and requires immediate attention. It often requires a television or radio station to interrupt regularly scheduled programming for live coverage of the story, and may also require affiliates to run a network feed for live breaking news events. The interruption is often signalled by a newsflash or “Special report” graphic and distinctive music cue. In the case of a 24-hour news network, a “breaking news” graphic or ticker may appear during regular programming, lessening the need for programming interruptions.
