When news events occur that require the interruption of current non-news programming, or even a regularly scheduled network newscast, the network will issue a “Newsflash” alert to its affiliates and begin a countdown sequence so that any stations can switch to the network feed. A news anchor then appears on-screen and the report begins, often with a graphic background and special music cue. The breaking news may last for a few minutes, or may continue for hours or even days of continuous coverage. Prior to the rise of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were only used for extremely urgent events like the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
