Breaking news is a broadcast news event that warrants an interruption of current non-news programming (or, in the case of network television newscasts, regularly scheduled news updates) to provide live coverage of the situation as it unfolds. Before 24-hour news channels emerged, breaking news was limited to national events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F.
