Breaking News (also known as late-breaking news or a special report) is a type of coverage where a story that has already been reported on or is of high importance to a viewer is interrupted by a broadcaster in order to report new information about the story. It is usually the most important news in a story that is being covered live, but sometimes it may be used for less significant events.
In broadcast television, a special report or breaking news event is usually introduced with an opening graphic that may include music. Then an anchor will introduce the story and offer a brief explanation about why the story is breaking.
If a network is in the middle of a regular newscast at the time of the special report, the newscaster will announce that the newscast is being interrupted to allow other affiliates to join in, or that it will resume when the coverage is complete. Depending on the magnitude of the news event, the network might even interrupt programming at other times.
When a breaking news event is covered on radio, the format is typically similar to that of television; it can be interrupted by an opening graphic, but it might not begin with a news anchor and is often not accompanied by music. The theme and tone of the program may also be altered to emphasize the importance of the story.
