Breaking news is a special type of news story that is so urgent, or requires nationwide coverage, as to require network and local stations to interrupt non-news programming (or in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts) to provide live reports on the event. Typically, an opening graphic is introduced with a distinctive music cue, accompanied by a voice-over telling viewers to stand by for breaking news. This is often followed by a countdown sequence, allowing network affiliates to switch over to the breaking news feed. Occasionally, a special report will also be displayed during regular programming using a special ticker.
