Breaking news refers to a breaking story that requires an immediate interruption of non-news programming on a television or radio station. A station’s regular program will usually pause or cut to a countdown sequence, and network affiliates will be alerted to stand by for a special report. Breaking news is typically accompanied by an opening graphic and distinctive music cues, such as those used by CBS News on the day of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, and by a ticker graphic that appears over regular lower thirds during live reporting. Breaking news is common for national events requiring nationwide coverage or severe weather events that elicit a high level of public urgency.
