In television and radio news, breaking news is an urgent event that warrants the interruption of non-news programming (or, sometimes, regular network newscasts) for live coverage of the event. Historically, the term was reserved for events of such magnitude as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which triggered nationwide coverage that required numerous stations to break away from their regularly scheduled programming. During a breaking news report, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey the urgency of the story. Alternatively, a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” ticker may be used instead.
