A breaking news story is a news event that is so urgent or important that it must interrupt other news programming, such as a national network’s regularly scheduled newscast or local television and radio stations. Breaking news is often indicated by a graphic that says “Newsflash” or “Special report” followed by a countdown sequence that allows affiliates to switch over to the network feed. Breaking news coverage may last for minutes, or continue for hours or even days. Previously, this type of interruption was reserved for events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which prompted nationwide coverage that required numerous stations to halt regular programming for extended periods of time.
