When a breaking news event occurs that requires an immediate interruption of regular non-news or regularly scheduled programming (or in some cases, a pause in the national network newscast), it is typically followed by a “Newsflash” or “Special report” graphic and a music cue that tells the broadcast audience to “stand by.” The network then begins its coverage of the developing story.
