Breaking news is an event that elicits nationwide coverage and requires stations to interrupt non-news programming in order to report it. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were reserved for extremely urgent news events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, for which news broadcasters would typically alert all of their affiliated stations to stand by and expect an immediate cut-in from the network feed.
