Trending is a news ticker that shows stories that are popular among viewers. It is a feature that has been part of the Current News app since launch. Breaking news is a term for a news story that requires immediate coverage and warrants the interruption of non-news programming on radio or television, or the pause of regular newscasts (or in rare cases, the end of live reporting). Depending on the urgency of the event, network affiliates may interrupt their local news programs with a special “Newsflash” or “Special Report” bulletin. Such breaks are common for national events, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and are usually accompanied by a special opening graphic with a distinctive music cue and lower thirds.
