Breaking News is a term used to refer to any current event that warrants an interruption of non-news programming (or, in the case of network newscasts, a countdown sequence to alert affiliated stations to switch over to the national feed) for live coverage. This may be a special report, newsflash or even an emergency broadcast. Such an interruption is often accompanied by a graphic that is overlaid on the lower thirds of all network affiliates, and typically features a distinctive music cue. Until the advent of 24-hour news channels, this type of programming interruption was generally reserved for highly urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
