Breaking news is a type of television or radio report that covers an event that is developing quickly and may require immediate coverage. It usually requires a break in non-news programming, or in the case of a national network, a countdown to allow affiliates to switch to the breaking news feed. This is normally followed by a graphics overlay or special ticker and a news anchor to introduce the story. It is a common practice at 24-hour news networks, although before they existed, broadcasters generally only interrupted regular programming for highly urgent events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, and weather reports involving severe storms. Some stations have a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” graphic and music cue that can be activated in the event of breaking news.
