When an event occurs that warrants breaking news coverage, a television station may interrupt regularly scheduled non-news programming (or, in the case of network-affiliated stations, a current network newscast) and provide live updates. This is known as a newsflash, special report, or simply breaking news. A newsflash may be followed by a countdown, and a news anchor or reporters describing the event and offering analysis. Previously, such interruptions were reserved for news events requiring nationwide attention and thus an interrupting “cut-in” from another station or the national network; however, with the advent of 24-hour news channels and their ability to break stories at any time, broadcasters have become more likely to use lower thirds or alert crawls during regular programming to indicate breaking news.
