Trending is a live breaking news story segment that appears on the top of a television or radio channel. It often uses a graphic and a distinct music cue to differentiate it from regular programming. The story is presented by a network or station, and can involve local, regional or national events. Depending on the severity of the event, a station’s or network’s regular commercial advertising may be suspended for prolonged coverage. Historically, breaking news has interrupted non-news programming for national events that require immediate coverage (such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963), but with the advent of 24-hour news networks, breaking news is now common, and can interrupt regular programing even during scheduled newscasts.
