In television and radio broadcasting, breaking news is a situation that warrants an interruption in regular non-news programming or, in the case of network network television, regularly scheduled newscasts. Depending on the urgency, this may be conveyed by a countdown sequence, an alert crawl during normal programming, or an on-screen graphic that cites the name of the story. The use of these graphics, along with a special theme song and a different color scheme for lower thirds, is often indicative of the urgency and importance of the news event being reported. Until the rise of 24-hour cable and satellite channels, news breaks were generally limited to major events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which required stations across the country to interrupt their own non-news programming for extended coverage.
