Breaking news is an urgent news event that requires the immediate interruption of regular programming, such as current non-news programing or regularly scheduled newscasts. Often the network feed will pause during a normal newscast to allow station affiliates to switch to the national network’s feed and begin coverage of the breaking story. The newscast usually begins with a graphics open, a distinctive music cue and a countdown sequence to alert viewers that the news event has been reported. In the past, break-ins of regular programming were typically used for extremely urgent news events such as a major natural disaster or the assassination of an important figure.
