A breaking news story is one that warrants an immediate interruption of current non-news programming, or in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts. It is often identified by an introductory graphic with a distinctive music cue, and typically appears on the upper right corner of the screen (although it may appear elsewhere, depending on the network). The breaking news report is normally followed by a news anchor who is present in-studio, via satellite, satellite uplink, broadband (B-GAN) or another means. In the past, stations usually interrupted their regular programs with break-ins and alert crawls for severe weather events, but that practice has mostly been eliminated with the advent of 24-hour news networks, which offer continuous coverage of breaking stories.
