The term “breaking news” refers to events that elicit immediate and widespread coverage, requiring an interruption of non-news or regular network news programming. Often the network will alert its affiliates to standby or pause the live newscast, and then broadcast a special graphic and distinctive music cue to mark the breaking story. A reporter then comes on the air to provide details and commentary about the event. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were typically reserved for highly urgent news such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963 or major severe weather events such as tornado warnings. Today, many networks use special tickers or “Newsflash” to highlight select breaking stories during regularly scheduled programs, lessening the need for break-ins.
