Breaking news is a news story of such urgency that it warrants the interruption of non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts). If an event is sufficiently important, a national network will send a signal to its affiliates asking them to pause their local broadcast and switch to the network’s feed. The network then usually provides an opening graphic accompanied by a distinctive music cue, with lower thirds and other graphics altered to convey the importance of the story at hand. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, interrupting regular programming for breaking news was usually limited to stories such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which prompted nationwide coverage that required numerous stations to cut-in.
