When breaking news events occur that warrant an interruption of non-news programming, television and radio networks may interrupt their regular newscasts to cover the story. They usually alert all affiliate stations to stand by and then start a countdown sequence on their news feeds, so that they can switch over to the network’s break-in feed when the appropriate time arrives. The national network newscast will usually pause and the station imaging promo or program reminder is overlaid with a special graphic with a distinctive music cue, indicating that there is a breaking news event occurring and that the viewer should tune in now to get more information about it.

Breaking news is often referred to as a Newsflash or Special Report. It is also sometimes used in the context of an alert crawl during regularly scheduled programming, as when a severe weather event occurs and requires immediate attention. In recent years, many major network television stations have used “Special Report” tickers to provide updates during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for program interruptions and “Newsflash” or “Alert Crawl” breaks.
