Breaking news is a term used interchangeably with “late breaking news” and “special report” to describe the most important story of the day. This term can refer to any news story of current interest to viewers at any time, as well as to a story that was previously reported. Sometimes breaking news is a term that is a redundant description of all the current news that is broadcast by a news organization. The term is often used in conjunction with “just in,” a phrase that is used instead of “breaking news.”
Breaking news is another source of interruptions. Breaking news in prime time can interrupt a prime-time show, especially if it is highly-rated. If the breaking news has no impact on the program’s timetable, the network or station may switch back to a regular newscast. Similarly, the network may continue showing the live shot of the anchor, while the local station cuts away to show a video of the breaking news. Depending on the situation, the coverage may be passed to a reporter at the scene. The reporter can continue sharing information as it becomes available.
