When a breaking news story is sufficiently urgent to justify interruption of regularly scheduled non-news programming (or even of a regular network or local television newscast), stations usually alert affiliates, who then interrupt their own broadcasts with an open graphic featuring a countdown sequence, overlaid on top of station imaging and/or a special news ticker. A news anchor is then typically introduced for the report, which may last minutes or hours. Before 24-hour news networks existed, such breaking news reports were generally limited to events of a national or international nature that elicited nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to break their programming simultaneously, or for severe weather events, which often prompted cut-ins during regular non-news programming or the use of alert crawls during daily network and local newscasts.
