Breaking news is a term used to describe a news event that is of such urgency that it warrants an interruption of regularly scheduled non-news programming, or even in the case of network affiliates, regular network program feeds. This type of report is usually accompanied by a distinctive music cue and often an altered lower third or other graphic to convey a sense of urgency. The report may be a newsflash or a special report, and may last only a few minutes, or continue for several hours or days. In the past, networks primarily interrupted non-news programming for urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, but this has since changed as 24-hour news channels have increased in prominence.
