In the days before 24-hour news networks, breaking news events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy often prompted network affiliates to interrupt regular programming for live coverage. This was usually accomplished with a special graphic or an alert crawl that replaced station identification during the interruption.
A similar effect was achieved with “Newsflash” and “Special Report” segments during regularly scheduled newscasts. These segments were generally followed by a network feed that allowed affiliates to switch over and continue their own local reporting. The segment was sometimes accompanied by music or other audio elements that conveyed the urgency of the story at hand.
