When a breaking news event occurs, it often interrupts non-news programming on local television or radio stations. If the news is so significant that a nationally networked newscast is in progress at the time, the network will often alert its affiliates to the fact that it is interrupting and ask them to stand by. The network will then launch a countdown sequence that is displayed on screen, giving the affiliates a short window of time before the national feed is switched on.

In the past, breaking news would be interrupted by “Newsflash” or “Special report” graphics during regular programming, but 24-hour news networks have largely eliminated the need for these cut-ins with their Special Report tickers that are activated on specific events such as severe weather, and fewer stations will use lower thirds for such alerts.
