When a story breaks that elicits national coverage that requires multiple stations to interrupt their regular programming, it is called breaking news. A station will use a special graphic, typically accompanied by a distinct music cue, to tell viewers to “stand by” and then the news anchors begin their report. The station’s lower thirds may also be changed to convey a sense of urgency. Until the 1990s, broadcasters would only use breaking news cuts-ins during severe weather events such as tornadoes.
