About Current News
When a breaking news event occurs that warrants an interruption of regular non-news programming (or, in the case of national network newscasts, even their regularly scheduled newscasts), a countdown sequence is usually displayed and the network feed is paused to allow affiliated stations to join. The network then usually opens with a graphic and a distinctive music cue that has the word “Newsflash” or “Special report” on it, indicating the nature of the story being covered. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, this was generally reserved for severe events that required nationwide coverage and forced many stations to interrupt their own programming; this type of interruption is now routinely seen during breaking weather events.
