Breaking news is a type of television or radio station story that is immediately relevant and important enough to interrupt non-news programming (or in some cases, even regular, scheduled newscasts). When a breaking event occurs that requires immediate national coverage, network stations will typically inform viewers that a special report will be coming up, or the current broadcast will stop and begin a countdown sequence to allow affiliated stations to switch over to the network feed. Previously, breaking news was only interrupted for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
