Breaking news is the term for a news event that requires an immediate interruption of current non-news programming, or in the case of network news programs, a pause of regular broadcasts to allow affiliate stations to switch to a live feed from the national news anchor. The breaking news will usually be announced with a distinctive music cue, a countdown, and a graphic overlaying the name of the topic being covered. Some networks also feature a special “Newsflash” or “Special report” ticker that will appear over the normal lower third graphics during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
