Newsflash or special report, also known as breaking news, is a short segment of a television or radio news program that breaks an important or urgent event. It usually interrupts other non-news programming and identifies the story with a unique graphic or music cue. In the past, such interruptions were limited to extremely urgent news events that warranted a nationwide response; for example, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, which prompted the network to stop regular programming for live coverage. This was a precursor to 24-hour news channels, where such breaks are commonplace. Some networks have a “special report” ticker during their regularly scheduled programs, which can lessen the need for cut-ins and alert crawls.
