When a breaking news story occurs that warrants an interruption of current non-news programming (or in the case of a network, its regular newscast) and/or national feeds, the broadcast will typically begin with a countdown sequence to alert any affiliated stations of the impending news break, which may then be joined by a graphic with a distinctive music cue. Depending on the nature of the breaking news, this may last for only a few minutes, or continue for hours or days as the story develops.
Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, these types of interruptions were reserved for events that posed a significant threat to life or property, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, or severe weather events that required nationwide coverage.
