Until the era of 24-hour news networks, it was unusual for television and radio stations to interrupt non-news programming in order to cover breaking news events. Such interruptions were typically reserved for extremely serious news events requiring immediate nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which required numerous network affiliates to halt their regular broadcasts and insert special reports using a “Newsflash” or a specially modified lower third graphic. More recently, some major television networks have begun to use special reports during regularly scheduled programing, which can reduce the need for cut-ins.
