Trending is the term used by many media outlets to announce breaking news. When an event occurs that warrants immediate national coverage (such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963), a station will interrupt current non-news programming or, in the case of major network newscasts, stop their regular broadcast to run an alert on their lower thirds. A countdown is often used to let all affiliated stations know that they will be interrupting their regularly scheduled programming, and a special graphic and music cue are used for the break. The break can last for just a few minutes, or may continue for hours or even days.
