The term breaking news refers to a news event of extreme urgency that requires immediate broadcasting. In North America, this typically involves severe weather or major national news events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. When an event occurs, the network interrupts regular programming with a special graphic and countdown sequence. This is often accompanied by a distinctive music cue. Depending on the event, and the length of time that follow-up coverage is required, regular commercial advertising may be suspended. Network affiliates may be required to include their station identification at the top of the hour overlaid on the special report.
