Trending is a special report, usually anchored by a news anchor on a network television or radio station. It is used when breaking news occurs that requires immediate attention, and may include a graphic, and often with a distinctive music cue. In the days before 24-hour news channels, such reports were reserved for extremely urgent events that required many stations to interrupt regular programming (such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963). If the national feed of a network is interrupted, the network will generally issue an alert to its affiliates, and their newscast will pause briefly while they switch over to the break.
