Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, programming interruptions were limited to a few select, severe breaking events that required immediate national coverage, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, or natural disasters that could cause widespread destruction. During these times, the network usually interrupts regular commercial advertising and alert crawls (which may or may not be displayed on lower thirds) to air special report graphics with a distinctive music cue.
