A breaking news report is a national or local broadcast interruption of non-news programming, such as regular newscasts or other regularly scheduled shows. This is typically done by a newsflash or special report graphic, with a distinctive music cue. It is usually preceded by a countdown sequence to allow network affiliates time to switch to the news feed. If the event warrants it, the regular program may pause for live coverage. Breaking news reports are commonly used for extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and severe weather events that threaten lives or property. The practice of interrupting programs for breaking news is less common than it was before 24-hour news channels were launched.
