Breaking news is a television news program or radio broadcast that covers a significant event that warrants the interruption of non-news programming, usually at the network level (although local station affiliates may interrupt their own local newscasts in such cases). When breaking news events occur that require immediate national coverage, the network will often alert its affiliates to stand by for an interruption, typically using a countdown sequence. The newscast is then interrupted with a news anchor reporting on the developing story. The breaking news can last only a few minutes, or may continue for hours or even days, depending on the nature of the story.
