As consumers have moved away from cable television and into streaming video, newscasters are facing an uncertain future. The share of Americans who watch cable television has decreased from 76 percent in 2015 to just 56 percent in 2021. As a result, news channels such as Fox News Channel are losing $20 per year on subscriber fees. In addition, the number of households who subscribe to streaming services has increased significantly.
Although streaming is a new and emerging technology, the major news networks have high hopes for it. The networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars to launch streaming operations. For instance, Fox has signed up 1.5 million subscribers for its streaming app. NBC News Now claims to stream 31 million hours of video every month. However, despite high hopes, it is still not yet clear whether streaming will succeed or fail. The media industry will need to continue to innovate if it wants to survive in the coming years.
Historically, the only way to get current news was by watching the town crier on his rounds. While a good town crier could get the word out, the town crier was limited by distance and news sources. A newssheet, however, was a much better option. It could be shared and kept for future reference. While print was a time-consuming process, television and cable TV could report the news of today.
